How to Say “Before” and “After” in Korean: 전에, 후에, and -고 나서
Learn the natural difference between 전에, 후에, and -고 나서—and why 일 후에 sounds awkward for “after work.”
Today, one of my students wanted to say:
She said:
I understood what she meant, but it didn’t sound natural in Korean.
Here are some better options:
Why does 일 후에 sound unnatural, even though nouns can come before 후에?
Let’s look at how Koreans express “after” and “before.”
How to Say “After” in Korean
Noun + 후에
Add 후에 after a noun that represents an event or time.
- 수업 후에 = after class
- 점심 후에 = after lunch
- 퇴근 후에 = after work
- 일주일 후에 = one week later
Although 일 can mean “work,” Koreans don’t normally use 일 후에 to mean “after work.” We usually say 퇴근 후에 or describe the action of finishing work.
Verb + -(으)ㄴ 후에
When 후에 follows a verb, the verb must be changed into the -(으)ㄴ form.
If the verb stem ends in a consonant, add -은 후에:
- 먹다 → 먹은 후에 = after eating
- 읽다 → 읽은 후에 = after reading
- 씻다 → 씻은 후에 = after washing
If the verb stem ends in a vowel, add -ㄴ 후에:
- 보다 → 본 후에 = after seeing
- 배우다 → 배운 후에 = after learning
If the verb stem ends in ㄹ, remove ㄹ and add -ㄴ 후에:
- 놀다 → 논 후에 = after playing
- 만들다 → 만든 후에 = after making
How to Say “Before” in Korean
Noun + 전에
Add 전에 directly after a noun:
- 수업 전에 = before class
- 점심 전에 = before lunch
- 퇴근 전에 = before leaving work
Verb + -기 전에
With a verb, simply add -기 전에 to the verb stem:
- 먹다 → 먹기 전에 = before eating
- 가다 → 가기 전에 = before going
- 씻다 → 씻기 전에 = before washing
- 공부하다 → 공부하기 전에 = before studying
